Spider veins are the small red or purple veins commonly seen on the skin surface of the thighs, calves, ankles and sometimes the face. These tiny veins often radiate from a dark center point, thus the name “spider vein.” There are two therapies for removing these veins: laser treatments and sclerotherapy.

Laser Vein Removal

Laser treatments deliver laser light to the targeted vein in a series of pulses emanating from a cooled hand piece that glides over the skin. The heat absorption causes a coagulation of the blood vessel, which is subsequently absorbed by the body. Depending on your condition, 2 to 10 treatments may be required. They are generally spaced four to six weeks apart to allow time for your body to clear the remnants of the treated veins. After laser treatment, a support stocking is recommended for daily wear for two weeks.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a system used to collapse the vein by injecting it with a sclerosing solution (a mild irritant). A sotradecol solution is used in the office instead of saline or salt water. This solution causes less discomfort and is better tolerated. It causes the vein to immediately collapse and disappear over a few weeks. After the sclerotherapy session, compression stockings are worn to aid in the prevention of blood clots and to help massage the muscles around the insufficient veins. These must be worn continuously for seventy-two hours and then daily for two weeks.

A consultation with Dr. Post is required before vein treatment is performed.
